My Grandma

Thank you for the way you made space for so much joy:
In the flour-dusted kitchen,
In the garden beds bursting with roses, dahlias, and pansies,
And in the traditions you carried with such care.

Grandma, you were resilient and endlessly caring,
A pioneer in your own quiet way.
You poured love into everything you did,
Gave freely, and always made me feel warm and safe.

Thank you for the memories:
Crushing Marie biscuits for your jelly slice,
Never-fail sponge cakes, egg sandwiches with generous amounts of salt and butter, and French onion oven-roasted chops.
For Elvis and The Bee Gees playing softly on the wireless,
Your drawers and cupboards filled with buttons, scarves, treasures, beads, and jewellery wrapped in tissue,
And your mauve and red lipstick, Elizabeth Arden Red Door perfume, face powder, and hairspray.

You gave me the most precious gift:
The freedom to be curious, to play, to imagine.
There were no limits, no expectations—just space to be a child exactly as I was.
And that kind of childhood stays with you forever.

I know you’re with me now:
In a garden in bloom,
In crime novels to read,
In music to enjoy,
In lemonade scones that never fall flat, And a cup of decaf tea.
In a packet of playing cards,
Watching tennis and cricket,
Always cheering on your beloved Cats.

I miss you so much, Grandma.

Today I honour my mum, Patricia — a woman whose love, strength and generosity shaped every part of who I am. Mum had a gift for making life feel rich, warm, and full and she expressed that love in a thousand little ways, especially through her incredible cooking. Her cakes were legendary — the kind that brought people together, made birthdays feel magical and filled the house with comfort. With Mum around, we never went hungry and we never felt unloved.
She worked incredibly hard to make sure we built a good reputation and stood strong in the world. Mum believed in doing things properly — with pride, commitment, and heart — and she passed that onto all of us.
Her generosity and fun-loving nature lit up every room she walked into. She could make a simple moment feel joyful and she had a humour and smile that softened even the hardest days. When I went through cancer, Mum’s kindness was unwavering. She held me through the fear, the exhaustion and the uncertainty with a strength only a mother can offer.
Patricia was a remarkable mum — caring, brave, funny and endlessly giving. I am so grateful for every meal she cooked, every joke she cracked, every moment she lifted me up. Her love is part of me forever.

Rest easy Pat. My thoughts are with you Laurie and family.

The card players at StJosephs have fond memories of Pat.

My deepest sympathy and prayers for Pat R.I.P. and Laurie and Family.
