Community Coffin

At Natural Grace, as an alternative to buying a coffin, we offer our community coffin with our love. This means that your person will travel to and from their service in this handled timber shroud bearer and cover. It can still be adorned with flowers or any other item that you would normally place on their coffin. Following their funeral service, your person will be returned into our care and gently transferred into a simple timber shroud bearer before being transferred for cremation or burial.
If choosing this offering, your person will already be shrouded before the service in the shroud of your choice.
Please talk to your Holistic Funeral Director about this option for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Coffin and a Casket?
The shape is the only difference – a coffin is tapered and usually with a removable lid, while a casket is of rectangular shape usually with an attached lid.
When would a Casket be chosen instead of a Coffin?
If someone has a large frame or is tall, a casket can be a more comfortable fit, otherwise it’s just a personal or cultural preference.
What is the most environmentally sustainable choice?
We recommend a coffin made of natural materials, sourced from local environments, responsibly managed forests, and approved by cemetery operators as being cleanly returnable to the earth, whether by cremation or by burial.
What is a Community Coffin?
At Natural Grace, as an alternative to buying a coffin, we offer our community coffin with our love. This means that your person will travel to and from their service in this handled timber shroud bearer and cover.
It can still be adorned with flowers or any other item that you would normally place on their coffin.
Following their funeral service, your person will be returned into our care and gently transferred into a simple timber shroud bearer before being transferred for cremation or burial.
Who can be a pall bearer and what does it involve?
Anyone who is in good health with reasonably good mobility (ie. can walk without being aided, has no balance issues or is not recovering from an injury or operation). Teenagers through to grandparents can be part of the 6 pall bearers required although many more hands can fit around the coffin or shroud if desired. Whilst traditionally the role of men in a family, pallbearing is a sacred honour that all people can take part in and gender should not be an issue when deciding who shall carry your person.
Are pall bearers always used for a burial?
No, they are not. In some instances, a mechanical lowering device is used. This can be determined by the Cemetery Trust, the availability of pall bearers, or the specific circumstances. However all shrouded burials require pallbearers.
What is meant by a ‘green’ burial?
At Natural Grace, as an alternative to buying a coffin, we offer our community coffin with our love. This means that your person will travel to and from their service in this handled timber shroud bearer and cover.
It can still be adorned with flowers or any other item that you would normally place on their coffin.
Following their funeral service, your person will be returned into our care and gently transferred into a simple timber shroud bearer before being transferred for cremation or burial.
